Investigate a full disk without deleting data

Check filesystem capacity and inodes without using risky cleanup commands.

Protect your data firstKeep a current off-server backup before reinstalling, updating, changing firewall rules, or running an application installer.

Inspect capacity

df -h
df -i

The first command shows filesystem space; the second shows inode usage. A filesystem can refuse new files when its inodes are exhausted even if it has free bytes. Mounted filesystems can have different limits.

Identify growth safely

Check application logs, uploads, database growth, backup copies, and container storage. A dashboard allocation is not always the guest filesystem size. Do not format or resize partitions based only on the chart.

Avoid destructive shortcuts

Do not remove database files, Docker volumes, or application directories to free space. Preserve a backup and identify a supported retention policy instead. Ask support about expansion if normal data exceeds the plan. Expansion can require infrastructure and filesystem steps; purchasing capacity alone does not guarantee the guest filesystem has already grown.
